Group of salt wells with a railroad in the background. From wood cut made before 1900. This date is indicated by the fact that the picture clearly shows the salt wells being pumped by the sucker rod system, which was discontinued about 1898 for compressed air. The railroad tracks shown in foreground were not built until about 1890.

Well in right background. Foreground is storage tank for brine, the salt water cistern.  Brine from all wells is piped into this cistern which serves merely as a reserve supply should the wells be shut off for a short time.  The bottom logs were place ca. 1870.
