Many schools across the country had canceled finals since most male students would be drafted or enlist in quick order.

Students protest the WVU administration's decision not to cancel the spring semester final exams as many other colleges had decided to do after the United States officially entered World War I on April 6th. Most male students would either enlist or be drafted as soon as possible forcing them to leave school before the end of the semester.

Oxen "Buck" and "Berry" could travel up to 5 miles an hour with a wagon load of tanbark, which was loaded at Alderson, W. Va. They delivered on average 2-2.5 cord (one cord cost between $8 and $10) from Ted Wills of Madams Creek.
Hite ('18) was a halfback for West Virginia University's Mountaineer football team. During the 1917 season, Hite enlisted in the First Officers Training Camp after the United States declared war and was commissioned as a lieutenant. In his absence, the team elected Russell Bailey as the captain of the team. Russell came to WVU from Huntington High and was well-known as an excellent athlete.

Fred "Ike" Mills ('20) played an end position for West Virginia University's football team. He came to WVU from Keyser Prep, where he had won himself a name as a backfield man. Shortly after the 1917 season, Mills enlisted in the military.
