Brown attended WVU for one year, leaving when her brother married her friend, Ella Butcher. She taught in area grammar schools before becoming an instructor of botany grammar and history at East Liberty (Pennsylvania) Normal School from 1891 to 1893. Married in 1894 to Rev. George Bent, she was active in Methodist Episcopal community and Women's Christian Temperance work before she died shortly after giving birth to her second child.
