The piers were part of the a 750-foot railroad bridge spanning the New River near the mouth of Glade Creek. The line was operated by the Glade Creek Coal and Lumber Railway, 1924-1929 and Babcock Coal & Timber Company, 1929-1936 . The bridge was salvage by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad during World War II.

Minden was a mining town in Fayette County, owned by Paddy Rend in 1899. The mines were closed in the 1950's.

Inscribed on the back of Photograph: "Meadow River Engine No. 7 at Hinton Yards enroute to Cass. Standing on the footboard with his camera is John E. Faulconer of the Hinton Daily News; Holding the child is James P. Williams, C&O (Chesapeake & Ohio) Brakeman. Also in the photograph is Raymon Ratliff, C&O Dispatcher. Others are not identified. By 1964, diesel engines had replaced the once famous steam engine."

The man standing beside the steam boiler is J. A. Coulter, who later became an engineer for C&O, others in the photograph are not identified. The water tank is the original, it was replaced several years later by another. This photograph was taken before the double track was made through Sewell.
