Austin (director of department of Journalism, University of North Dakota, and president of the American Society of Journalism School Administrators), and Frank Shea (foreign correspondent and assistant to the publisher of the news magazine, Time) at the time ASJSA presented its eighth annual publication award 1953/08/26 at Michigan State College. Mr. Shea delivered the main luncheon address that day.'

"First Land Battle--First land battle between the North and South here, June 3, 1861. Confederates under Col. Porterfield were dislodged by Federal troops from Gen. McClellan's army under Col. Kelley. The old covered bridge here was used by both armies."

Established in 1938, the Madrigal Singers of Clarksburg have been performing for more than 75 years. During the 1940's through the 1970's, Bill James directed the group. E.W. "Bill" James wrote "My Home Among the Hills" for the West Virginia Centennial among other musical compositions. The madrigal group performs some recent music, but primarily sings music dating from the English Renaissance while wearing period clothing.
