'The famous rock at Harper's Ferry which was so often visited by President Thomas Jefferson, was named after him. It was from this point that Jefferson made his well-known remark that a view from this rock was 'worthy of a trip across the Atlantic'. It commands a view up and down the Shenandoah and across country for a distance of forty miles.' From West Virginia Collection Pamphlet 7514 'Picturesque Scenery among the Allegheny Mountains of NY, PA, MD, VA, and WV, etc.' Neely Educational Library, No. 6, 1899, F. Tennyson Neely, Publisher.
