United States Army Corporal Thomas W. Bennett, a Morgantown native, was a Conscientious Objector, but he willingly served his country as a medic in the Vietnam War. Bennett was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for his gallantry in action, only the second known Conscientious Objector to receive the Medal. While under heavy fire and eventually at the cost of his own life, he relentessly gave life-saving aid to the wounded. Bennett was killed in Pleiku Province, Republic of Vietnam, February 11, 1969.
