He was a Professor of Music who taught Vocal Diction, Repertoire, Opera Theatre, and Piano at the undergraduate and graduate level. Benner directed 38 productions of 34 different operas with the WVU Opera Theatre. His wife, the American soprano opera singer Frances Yeend, was a Lecturer in Music and Voice in the WVU College of Creative Arts after retiring from her Opera Career in 1966 when they both moved to Morgantown, W. Va.
