An old method of extracting salt. Salt was lifted out of water and placed on the boards 'walkways' to drain. It was then removed in wheelbarrows for storage.

This date is indicated by the fact that the picture clearly shows the salt wells being pumped by the sucker rod system, which was discontinued about 1898 for compressed air. The railroad tracks shown in foreground were not built until about 1890.
