The church, built in 1889 through 1896, held worship services for Storer College students and its own congregation of mostly African-American residents from Harpers Ferry and Bolivar. It was named for New England minister and abolitionist, Reverend Silas Curtis, who was one of the moving forces in establishing Storer College.
