At the foot of Massanutten is the Shenandoah River with its famous seven "horseshoe bends," winding its way amid fertile fields and beautiful farm properties. This view at sunset is especially inspiring and it is little wonder that Governor Spotswood and his "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" dedicated themselves to the "winning of the West" after crossing the Blue Ridge at Swift Run Gap.'
