Alderson raised two companies in his native Greenbrier County region and one was assigned to the 14th Virginia Cavalry . In the second, Company A, Alderson served as First Lieutenant. Company A was attached to the 36th Virginia Cavalry under the command of Albert Jenkins and "Grumble" Jones.
