Also at a time when Crow was Raleigh County's largest community and stood fair, in the minds of many, to inherit the Seat of County Government. Crow had a large lumber mill and railroad, (the first in the county) connecting Glade Creek with Beckley. Back row: Emmett Akers, Arminta Kingrey, Anna Ratliff (Mrs. Clarence Neely), Lena Akers sister of Emmett (now postmistress at Crow, W. Va.). In book: "This is purported to be the first organized Boy Scout troop in Raleigh County; there was a No. 1 at East Raleigh, but it surrendered its charter and joined the above. It was sponsored by Raleigh Mining Institute; its prime mover was Col. Ernest Chilson and Scout Master, R. B. Holmes, of 308 Temple Street, Beckley. Mr. Holmes led the troop for ten years. The cabin was handsomely built by R. M. I. on the hill back of the coal company store, and still exists-unused and deteriorating!" (p. 77). Back of portrait: "Boy Scouts and cabin. Col. 7. Group Portrait of High School Freshman Basketball Team, Shady Spring, W. Va.

The photograph was taken while West was driven through the streets of Beckley by a very proud fan following West Virginia University's amazing run in the 1959 NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Mountaineers make it to the National Championship game, losing to California by one point. West was named the MVP of the tournament. The others in the photograph are not identified.
