Portrait of the prominent citizen who lived in the city of Hinton. Nowlan served as a master electrician in the United States Army Air Service during World War I. By 1927, Nowlan was the city manager of Hinton all the way through 1935. In World War II, he managed overseas and continental district organizations in the Office of Censorship. In 1945, he developed a 200-acre wildlife sanctuary at "Split Rock" overlooking Greenbrier River near Alderson, W. Va. During the Korean War, he served as the budget administrator for the United States Air Force. Finally, in 1960, Nowlan became the financial secretary for the Summers County Board of Education.

Joseph Jones Charlton of Madams Creek, Summers County, W. Va.

Description:
Charlton is a Civil War veteran who fought on the side of the Confederacy. He was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Va. in 1864. He later went on to become the first school teacher in Madam's Creek, a town near Hinton, W. Va.Charlton first married Nancy Parker. Together, Parker and Charlton had a daughter, Mary Jane Charlton. Mary Jane would later marry Silas Hinton.
Samuel F. Harsh is pictured sitting down beside his wife, Louisa, who is holding baby Goldie Claire. Standing in the background is William and Alice Kidwell.Harsh was a home guard at Phillippi, W. Va. during the Civil War and owned a Blacksmith shop. He and his wife moved to Davis around 1890.J. William Kidwell worked for Babcock Lumber Co. and Blackwater Coal Co.
