Kanawha Blvd., between Duffy St. and California Ave. and extending to Washington St., stands on shaded landscaped grounds overlooking the Great Kanawha River. Designed in the Italian renaissance style by Cass Gilbert, it was completed in 1932 at a cost of $10,000,000. A dome 300 feet high, embossed with gold leaf, crowns the central unit, which measures 120 by 558 feet. Atop the crowning lantern is a bronze staff upon which is poised a golden eagle."
