The old instrument, with its special cupped ring that slipped over the middle finger and protected the palm of the hand, is part of a collection given to the WVU School of Dentistry by descendants of Dr. John Matthew Gay Fairfax, once a dentist in Reedsville, Preston County, W. Va.'
