'Beckley was founded in 1835 by General Alfred Beckley, a son of John Beckley, who was born in London, England, and came to this country when a child. The ground upon which the city of Beckley was started in 1835 and Raleigh County formed in 1850 was a part of the Beckley-Moore grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to Alfred Beckley's father, John Beckley, and Andrew Moore. Picture was clipped from the cover of W. Va. Wildlife Mag. Vol. 11, No. 12, December 1933.'
