- 'A deer bounds through the forest in Canaan Valley where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a 27,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge. West Virginia is the only state in the nation that does not have a refuge. Fifty-five different mammals in all are believed to live in the valley, from white-tailed deer to black bear, the elusive fisher and rare and secretive goshawk. Over 160 species of birds have been identified here, native brook and brown trout live in its streams and over 580 plants grow in the Valley, some 40 of which are listed as rare to W. Va.'
