- "The winner of the 1956 Newberry Medal, Jean Lee Latham is a native of Buckhannon, W. Va. and a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Miss Latham's specialty has been historical biography written for younger readers. Her biography of Samuel F. B. Morse, Medals for Morse (1954) has been translated into German. Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, the Newberry Award winner, was also chosen as a Junior Literary Guild selection and received honorable mention for the Hans Christian Anderson Medal. Eli Whitney, Matthew Fontaine Maury, John Ericsson, Joseph Jefferson and Cyrus W. Field have also been subjects for Miss Latham's writings. Although she is best known for her contributions to children's literature, she has published numerous plays, and a handbook for actors and directors. Her most recent children's stories have been translated into Spanish. Miss Latham now lives in Miami, Florida."
