Stevens recorded the following in his diary regarding the brutal fighting at the Third Battle of Winchester: "Great battle ... fought 11 hours. Early retreated with heavy loss in killed, wounded and captured. My gun expended 96 rounds of ammunition. Captain Chapman mortally wounded ...". Captain Chapman died 10 days later. He was 23 years old.
