Horseshoe Curve on U.S. Route 50, East of Grafton and Clarksburg, W. Va.
Description:
Caption on back of postcard reads: "The Northwestern Turnpike, U.S. 50, was urged by George Washington in 1784 as an all-Virginia route to the Ohio. It was authorized in 1827, started in 1831 and completed to the Ohio River at Parkersburg in 1838. It is a monument to the skill of its engineers, Colonel Claudius Crozet, who had been an officer in Napoleon's army, and Charles Shaw." Published by Rex Heck News Company. (From postcard collection legacy system--subject.)
"The makings of a mammoth traffic jam appear in this photo taken in the early 1950s in Clarksburg's West End. At left are Roger Robert's Esso service station, Kroger's supermarket, a Dairy Queen, and some apartment buildings. In the background is Pierpont Elementary School."
